Emigrant's Suitcase

Object No. 95 Emigrant's suitcase, 1950s
National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

An emigrant’s suitcase, packed to the brim,

With all sorts of things, big and small, thick and thin,

With the leather trimmings ready to blow,

And the zip zipped up, ready to go.

With a picture of mother

And my Grandad’s old watch.

A box of fags

And a bottle of scotch.

Full of memories

From my old home.

Pictures and old momentos

Of everywhere I’ve roamed.

I’m looking forward to my new life

Across the Atlantic sea.

I’m leaving a lot of friends behind me,

Please never forget me.
