Decorating the May Bush
By Michael Heffernan
My memory
My Mother’s family came from the same townland as my Fathers i.e. Rathordan. When she was a child growing up in the 1930’s her father would cut a May bush and set it up in the front garden of their house in view of the road and she and her sisters would decorate the tree with little coloured rags. I often heard my Mother tell this story. Her father would sprinkle holy water on the thresholds of their house and on the farm gateways.
