Anglo Irish Bank Sign

by Elisa Kehrel, 5th Year

Object No. 99 Anglo Irish Bank sign, 2000-2011
National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History

A middle-aged man called John

With a wife and three children at home

He had always worked hard at the AIB

But was not anymore an employee

Without money, without a job

He had always been in the pub

Following what happened to his old workplace

Once upon a time, from 1964 till 2011

The Anglo Irish Bank

Was a big business with 1777 employees (2008)

Headquartered in Dublin

At the end lots of money was away

A bill of around €29 billion

The Irish citizens had to pay

For their trust in the bank

First nationalisation

Then wind-down mode in 2009

“The bank is dead and so am I”

Thought John

He had no Job, he had no money

But a family which was always hungry

He did not know what to do

He was sad, he was depressive

And he drank really excessive

Always in the pub

Next to the old AIB

On Wednesday 20 April 2011

Something happened countrywide

All signages got away

Removed of the side

Of the buildings

In July 2011 the AIB

Merged with the Irish Nationwide Building Society

Forming a new company

Which made John really happy

He hoped to get a new job

So everything would get well again

He could care for his beloved ones

And be his family a good man
