1) Family Histories

Gather all of your known information. You will be amazed at how many names, birth-dates, marriage dates and other details about your ancestors you can collect just by talking to family members. Record these stories and tales because this first-hand information may become vital later on.

2) Work Backwards

Use the most recent records that family members may have including journals, wills, deeds, baptism records and marriage, birth and death certificates. If you spread the word that you’re beginning a family tree other family members may want to get involved.

3) Census
